Overview
Looking to undertake an immersive global learning experience at one of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in China? Interested in furthering your Mandarin language skills in the thriving capital of Jiangsu province?
This Master of Asian and Pacific Studies semester exchange program provides the opportunity for students to experience overseas study and life in the bustling city of Nanjing, at one of the oldest educational institutions in China, Nanjing University (NJU).
Situated in the old capital city of Nanjing, NJU features three campuses: Xianlin Campus, Gulou Campus and Pukou Campus. NJU boasts a faculty made up of the most accomplished scholars in China, a large number of outstanding disciplines and many important national and provincial research platforms.
You will undertake a semester exchange at NJU during Spring semester. While undertaking courses to compliment your ANU degree program, experience traditional cultural events during the Nanjing Spring Garden party, strap on your hiking boots and explore Niushou Mountain and enjoy the abundance of picture-perfect Plum and Cherry blossoms.
This program is open to currently enrolled students of the
Master of Asian and Pacific Studies.

Areas of Study
Nanjing also offers a strong Chinese language program from beginner to advanced. Students with a high level of Chinese language proficiency (HSK 5 or above) can also access courses taught in Chinese.

Credit Equivalency
The equivalent of 24 units of credit at ANU is 16 units at Nanjing University
Study Activity
Students will enrol in 24 units ASIA5920: Semester in Asia to participate in this course
Nanjing University academic calendar (approximate dates only):
- Spring semester (ANU Semester 1) runs from mid-February to mid-July
- Fall semester (ANU Semester 2) runs from early September to mid-January
Eligibility and Selection Criteria
This opportunity is open to ANU postgraduate students who:
- are currently enrolled in the Master of Asian and Pacific Studies and;
- have successfully completed at least 24 units of study towards their ANU MAPS degree program at the time of application and;
- hold a current ANU GPA of 4.0 or higher
Applicants hoping to study Chinese-taught courses must also have a Chinese Proficiency Test score of HSK 5 or higher.
Due to the generous support from the Australian Government’s Endeavour Mobility Grant to offer this program, participants must also:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be currently undertaking a postgraduate degree at the ANU (MAPS)
- Have approval for this exchange program to count towards your current postgraduate program (MAPS)

Application Details
You must complete and submit your application before Sunday 3 March 2019.
As part of your exchange application you will be required to provide:
- A completed "Personal Details" questionnaire
- A completed "Exchange Application"
If you are successful, you will be advised of your application outcome by Tuesday 12 March 2019 and must be able to confirm your participation by Monday 25 March 2019.
Successful participants will then be required to submit an application to Nanjing University as part of the exchange process (further information will be provided to successful participants).
Funding Opportunities
CAP has secured a small number of Endeavour Mobility Grants of $3,000 for eligible postgraduate students. To be eligible you must:
- Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
- Be currently undertaking a postgraduate degree at the ANU
- Have this course count toward your current postgraduate program

Travel and Other Costs
Participants in this exchange will receive free student accommodation from Nanjing University.
You are required to cover the costs of all expenses for your participation in this exchange program including travel to and from Nanjing.
You will pay your tuition fees to ANU for this 24 unit course.
The costs of studying overseas vary greatly depending on your lifestyle and where you go. Major costs are your return airfares, accommodation and living expenses, which vary from country to country. Living and travel costs can average approximately $2000 per month (more in some high-cost countries) for full semester or year programs. Some partner universities also require you to pay for health insurance, orientation or extra-curricular activities, so be aware that extra costs like these might pop up.
Accommodation
ANU students may be eligible to apply for accommodation at
Nanjing University dormitories. If you are unsuccessful in obtaining dormitory accommodation, you will be responsible for self-sourcing your accommodation for the duration of the program.
General Information for Mobility Programs
Applicants should ensure they have a passport that is valid for at least 6 months after the end date of the program.
